Is Edge that bad?

If you really want to know how bad the speed of Edge is for web browsing, there is now a great way of testing it. It is "the iPhone network test". It will let you test the real speed of your internet connection in a nice iPhone sized website. It will easily let you compare Edge with WiFi. You can check it out at http://www.iphonenetworktest.com/.

And by the way, no, this test wasn't performed on Edge!

Thx for writing up my site. I just added the ability to save results from the tests. Basic results are available now, more in depth reports coming soon.

Great tip MacGeek & great site benr75!

Out here in the boondocks, we don't have 3G, so I'd be stuck with EDGE even if the iPhone becomes 3G-capable.

I don't see what the HUGE deal is about. Are people really stupid enough to think they would use the iPhone as their primary internet connection if they had 3G? All you need with the iPhone is basic connectivity, which EDGE gives you. Need faster? Go WiFi! I can get WiFi in many places around town, but I believe I'd need to drive a few hundred miles to get 3G.

The only thing 3G capability would do for me is run my battery down. Since I'm getting 13 hours a charge right now, I say "Don't mess with it!".

Would it be nice to have a 3G connection? Yes! But it's not even available here. Would I be willing to sacrifice significant battery life for it? No way!

Google for "3G network poor battery" and read the first hit ("Samsung blackJack poor life 3G turn off"). Apple was really in an unenviable position... go 3G & they'll bitch about battery life, go EDGE & they'll whine about the speed. For me, the choice is clear... EDGE + excellent battery life!
